Wade Martin, MD

WadeMartinDr. Martin grew up in Birmingham and attended the University of Alabama. Following medical school at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, he completed an internship and residency in anesthesiology at the University of Kentucky Chandler Medical Center in Lexington, Kentucky. Dr. Martin began his interest in pain management during residency and completed his pain management training at the University of Texas Southwestern Hospital and Parkland Hospital in Dallas Texas where he completed an interventional Pain Management Fellowship. He then returned to Birmingham and has been practicing pain management in the Birmingham area since 2008.

Dr. Martin treats patients with all types of acute and chronic pain, including neck and low back pain, neuropathic pain, complex regional pain syndrome, and cancer pain. He has a special interest in painful spine disorders. After an accurate diagnosis, he often utilizes minimally invasive non-surgical procedures to alleviate pain such as peripheral nerve blocks, lumbar epidural steroid injections, cervical epidural steroid injections, selective nerve root blocks, facet joint injections, radiofrequency ablation procedures for the treatment of chronic pain, vertebral augmentation procedures such as kyphoplasty, and spinal cord stimulation, among other procedures.

Dr. Martin utilizes a comprehensive holistic approach in the treatment of painful conditions. With each new patient he starts with identification of the patient's pain generator. He then involves the patient in formulating a unique treatment plan tailored to their individual situation. Dr. Martin's treatment plans are multi-modal and may include physical therapy, medications, minimally invasive procedures, aquatic therapy, psychological and behavioral therapy. He recognizes that pain can negatively affect quality of life including functional activities of daily living, social life, and emotional well-being. He aims to restore overall function while minimizing dependence on opioids and improve quality of life.

Dr. Martin holds board certification by the American Board of Anesthesiology in both Anesthesiology and Pain Management. Away from the office, Dr. Martin enjoys spending time with his wife, Kelli, and their daughters Sadie and Sydney. Dr. Martin keeps active with cross training, jogging, weight lifting, and when time allows, basketball, skiing, and golf.
